Flying with formula
Medically necessary items are not subject to the TSA 3-1-1 liquid rule and are allowed through airport security in any quantity once they have been properly screened.
Passengers are encouraged to carry only the amount needed for the duration of their trip, including possible delays. Any additional formula can be packed in checked baggage.
If you are traveling with a specialized, ready-to-feed formula like Kate Farms that may not be available at retail stores, we recommend bringing enough formula with you to last at least two days in case your checked luggage is delayed or lost.
Here are a few helpful tips for flying with Kate Farms:
Here are some tips for flying with Kate Farms:
- Arrive early to allow extra time for TSA screening
- For longer trips, consider shipping your formula and supplies to your destination in advance
- Check with your airline about waived baggage fees for medical supplies
- You can request that your TSA agent put on a clean pair of gloves before handling any medical equipment or supplies
- Ice packs can be used to keep your formula cool during travel. Frozen items do not count as liquids, as long as they are completely frozen. Please do not freeze the formula itself
- Be prepared for TSA agents to open some cartons during the screening process
- Pack liquids and medical equipment last so they are easy to access. Separate them from other belongings before you reach security
- Ask your doctor to write a letter explaining your medical condition and listing the medical nutrition and equipment you are bringing with you. This letter should only include information that is reasonable and relevant for your travel needs
