What should I know about transitioning to Kate Farms?
Some people may experience mild symptoms of intolerance when starting Kate Farms or switching from another formula. This can happen when formula becomes a new or primary source of nutrition. Common symptoms may include nausea, stomach discomfort, gas, bloating, or diarrhea. These symptoms typically resolve within a few days. If they continue longer than that, contact your healthcare provider directly.
To help ease the transition, your provider may recommend starting Kate Farms gradually.
If you are new to formula
If this is your first time using formula, your healthcare provider may guide you to begin with smaller amounts and slowly increase over time. The Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition provides guidance on how to initiate and advance pump-assisted feedings.
For pediatric patients, the recommendation is to start with one to two milliliters of formula per kilogram of body weight per hour. As tolerated, this amount can be increased by 0.5 to one milliliter per kilogram per hour every six to twenty-four hours until the full target rate is reached.
For adult patients, the suggested starting amount is between ten and forty milliliters per hour. This can be increased by ten to twenty milliliters per hour every eight to twelve hours or as tolerated until the goal rate is achieved.
If you are transitioning from another formula
If you are currently using a different formula, your provider may recommend blending Kate Farms into your current routine slowly over several days. This gradual shift can help the body adjust and improve tolerance.
One common approach is to transition over the course of seven days. Your healthcare provider can tailor this schedule to your needs. Please note that mixing two formulas in a feeding pump or gravity bag may affect performance, so check with your provider before combining formulas in the same system.
